Introduction to Materials Testing in a Manufacturing Environment

An understanding of the mechanical properties of many engineering materials. We study the test methodologies and standards developed to ensure that materials can be understood and safely deployed in a range of in-service scenarios. This course combines both classroom material along with practical hands on testing of real specimens in commercial test house.

Suitable for anyone wishing to gain an understanding of the key role of mechanical testing and ancillary equipment for many purposes such as quality control, material selection and ensuring that the materials selected are ‘fit for purpose’.
Attendees do not need to have any formal qualifications but will require some technical knowledge.

Course programme
  • Why test? A review of the value of testing.
  • The development of standards and metrology.
  • Material fundamentals – atomic structure, microstructure, crystal structure and deformation processes in crystals.
  • Mechanical property determination – tensile, hardness, formability, toughness, fatigue, creep, corrosion testing, and a review of selected standards to indicate key factors which influence test accuracy in terms of sample preparation, equipment selection etc.
  • The mechanical behaviour of ferrous and non-ferrous alloys, polymers, composites and ceramics.
  • Non-destructive testing methodologies including in-service inspection, dye-penetrant, ultrasonics and radiography.
  • Practical mechanical testing – tensile test, impact testing, metrology and data analysis.
Assessment
2 hour written exam.
