Who should attend?
Anybody currently working with samples which utilise light and electron microscopy techniques. Attendees do not need to have any formal qualifications but will require some technical knowledge.

Course programmeTheory and understanding of the methods that underpin a wide range of characterisation techniques. Practical implementation of this knowledge by undertaking the following:
- Sample preparation techniques including metallography and ion beam milling
- Carbon and metal coating
- High quality imaging of metals and non-metals
- Light microscopy including compound and extended depth of field microscopes
- Scanning electron microscopy (secondary, backscatter and variable pressure)
- Energy dispersive electron spectroscopy for chemical composition analysis
- Advanced post processing software

DurationCourse duration is 21 hours – courses can be taught over three consecutive days, three days over a three week period, or as evening sessions.
Assessment2 hour written exam.
This course provides the attendee with the practical abilities to carry out sample preparation, optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, chemical analysis (EDS), failure analysis and mechanical testing; along with gaining the theoretical knowledge to interpret results and understand physical metallurgy.
An understanding of the mechanical properties of many engineering materials. We study the test methodologies and standards developed to ensure that materials can be understood and safely deployed in a range of in-service scenarios. This course combines both classroom material along with practical hands on testing of real specimens in commercial test house.
This course details the scientific background associated with the destructive and non-destructive testing techniques currently deployed for metal, ceramic, polymer and composite assemblies, in a variety of market sectors.
