Tata Steel Construction – New Design App

Dr Daryn Taylor
20 April 2020

A new software tool from Tata Steel, which has been developed in partnership with the Steel Construction Institute, has recently been released. The fully revised app version of the well-known ‘Blue Book’ is now available for any Engineer or interested person to freely download from the app store on either Apple or Android.

The app has been developed primarily to aid engineers involved in structural design. The new Celsius® Structural Hollow Sections Design app includes Tata Steel’s entire structural hollow sections range. The app includes data for square, rectangular, circular and elliptical hollow sections, along with comprehensive section property data for key products.

To save time, the app can automatically calculate the available steel section sizes, based on a project’s specific loading requirements, which helps to efficiently assess alternative specifications.

Steve Whitfield, Manager at Structural Tubes at Tata Steel, made the following comment: -

“In this digital era, we knew that we wanted to create a valuable, efficient and user-friendly design tool, all qualities that I believe we have achieved with our Structural Hollow Sections Design app – the all-new, essential guide for the design of steelwork.”

Tata Steel believes that the new app can provide results based on the actual effective lengths input by the user, which can help to improve accuracy.

Users of the app can also easily apply filters, such as specifying a maximum or minimum size within the calculation, making it easier to further control the information provided.
