The Materials and Manufacturing Academy M2A incorporating the Centre for Doctoral Training in Functional Industrial Coatings, is based within the Faculty of Science and Engineering at Swansea University. We offer funded scholarship positions for graduates to conduct research in partnership with a sponsoring company, leading to the degrees of Master by Research or Engineering Doctorate. It is a condition of our funding that candidates have the right to live and work in Wales at the end of their studies, providing a pipeline of highly skilled graduates to drive the knowledge economy within Wales and the wider community.

In essence we are an upskilling project, and we train our participants not just in research skills, but also in business, interpersonal and leadership skills, positioning our graduates to contribute at the highest level in their chosen careers. We offer our partner businesses and students, access to world leading research facilities at Swansea University’s Bay Campus. All our students work closely with their sponsor business throughout their candidature period and spend extensive periods of time at the partners site undertaking a variety or research activity. Our Industrial Tour is a highlight of each academic year, exposing our students to a variety of operational manufacturing facilities throughout the UK, including Airbus, Jaguar Land Rover and JCB.

We are proud to work with the Metal Project, and count amongst our graduates, students who started their journey of learning with Project Metal and progressed onto Undergraduate studies in Material Science and Engineering before moving onto Doctoral Studies. Recently students have joined us for Masters’ level study, having changed direction from their undergraduate studies through taking work-based learning courses with Metal.

Generous funding from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and the Wales European Funding Office (WEFO) allows us to support businesses in their research endeavours at significantly reduced cost; currently £10.5K per annum for an Engineering Doctorate (4 years) and £4495 for a Masters by Research.

Enquiries are welcome to M2A@Swansea.ac.uk. Our current areas of research include but are not limited to: Coatings Technologies, Corrosion, Next Generation Packaging Materials, Biocides and Biofilms, Photovoltaics, Electronic Materials, Steel Technologies and Circular Economy.
