In the last 10 months our lives have changed exponentially. Our ‘normal’ pretty much changed overnight.

Suzanne Parry Jones, ION leadership Project Lead shares how they have adapted to a new way of working in the last 12 months, and how they are supporting Welsh businesses to do the same.

One of the masterclasses we deliver on the ION leadership programme covers ‘Leading Innovation and Change’. We look at the change curve, discuss our emotional reactions to change, and focus on why we are resistant to change, why we fear it. We now have the perfect scenario on which to give this topic a backdrop - 2020, the year of change in business.

Led by Swansea University in partnership with Bangor University, the ION leadership project is backed with £5.7m from the European Social Fund. In over 10 year we have supported 1400+ leaders in Wales, in over 1000 businesses. We have supported managers, aspiring leaders and entrepreneurs to develop high quality skills through targeted leadership programmes that aim to raise productivity in the workplace whilst developing sustainable, profitable enterprises. Managing change is a crucial element of becoming a sustainable, profitable business.

We have always delivered our leadership programmes face-to-face. In 2020 we had to adapt and we started delivering our leadership programmes virtually. The feedback so far has been fantastic, but we know that we still have plenty to learn. We obviously cannot wait to get back to delivering face-to-face, when it is safe to do so, but in the meantime, it is hugely reassuring to know that our delegates are still having a hugely engaging experience.

Thanks to European Social Fund support, all our programmes that start before the end of August 2021 will be fully-funded. We run 2 leadership programmes, an ILM Level 3 New Leaders programme and an ILM Level 5 Leading Growth programme.

The New Leaders programme is designed to develop and enhance the leadership and management skills of managers and supervisors in the early stages of developing their leadership skills.

The Leading Growth programme focuses on the essential skills required for leaders and managers in small, medium and large organisations. It places particular emphasis on developing leadership skills to facilitate business growth.

You can find out more about both programmes, and details of upcoming courses on the Courses section of our website.

Change is the only constant, and the last 10 months have taught us that we shouldn’t always fear change. Many of these changes are positive and empowering, and have proved what we are really capable of. We can face and embrace change, as we know it is inevitable for business growth, development and innovation and it enables us to achieve so much more.
